It's been quite a long couple weeks since my last update here. An old friend that I hadn't talked to in a long time passed away, my job got insanely hard and then easy-ish, and I picked Elder Scrolls Online back up. This one's not really going to be much of a tech blog. I just felt like writing. My therapist suggested I journal but like... I could just code instead? Anyway enjoy the read.
I'm pretty sure my job is trying to get us to quit. They recently suggested that the company replace the entire IT department with vendors to save money. It's a non-profit hospital but we've been loosing money the last few years. To combat this, our CFO brought a profesional company in whos job is to analyze workflow and suggest things that will help the company to save money. Every department in the hospital is scared of them. They are suggesting cuts left and right and then conveniently suggesting that they offer the same services on contract at a reduced cost. A couple months ago they suggested that IT was cut from the hospital entirely and replaced with their services. It seemed like the CFO really wanted to go for it.
Of course it got a lot of pushback. We manage 300+ servers in an environment where timing could mean life or death. Do you really want to be stuck on hold waiting for some generic third party to come in and re-learn your environment every time something is down. Not a fucking chance! Well instead of just firing us they've decided to make life harder. I really think it's so that we'll be forced to quit. They cut help desk down to one person for every shift. If anyone calls out there is nobody to cover for them. So instead of fixing that, system administration is now obligated to sit on help desk when needed. There goes time for all my projects... If I've taken a lesson in any of this, it's ticket everything. You never know when you're going to need to cover your ass.
My wife was in a car accident recently. Thankfully she wasn't hurt but I can't say the same about her CR-V. Poor thing was totaled. It was a sad moment but we got a nice chunk of change for it. We've been trying to have a baby so we decided to look at bigger cars. It was time to say goodbye to the CR-V and hello to the Pilot! We got a 2023 Honda Pilot Touring with 40k miles on it. The thing is a beaut. I'm not normally into red cars but it's a very elegant red and looks great in the driveway. The thing has all the bells and whistles. Safety features out the ass, huge moon roof, dual memory seat positions, wireless carplay and charging and a million other things. I'm pretty jealous but I still love my no nonsense truck.
I guess we just felt like spending a ton of money or something. I bought a sleep number. My wife has had horrible back pain for a long time now and the doctor has begun prescribing her muscle relaxers. I'm not a fan of pills and decided we should spare no expense to make things as comfortable as possible. We've been sleeping on basically a giant sheet of memory foam. We got a mattress in a box when that was a trend. The sleep number is game changing. She doesn't wake up in pain anymore and I can keep my number low so that the bed is still soft. Can't reccomend it enough. I've yet to look into the data privacy of it's smart features. I'm sure it's more invasive than I'd like but anything is worth my wife not having to take pills to me.
Right after buying the bed my dog found a copperhead in the backyard. She was bit on the muzzle. It was a very scary experience. We rushed her to the vet where they confirmed the bite was a copperhead. They gave her pain medication but didn't have anti-venom locally. We drove an hour north to a vet better equipped. Of course they had just used the last shot of anti-venom the day before. Luckily my dog is big enough that they didn't think it was necessary. They kept her overnight and sent her home the next morning with pain medication and told us to monitor. She's since made a full recovery and is running around the backyard like nothing happened. Thank God.
That's all. I picked it back up and love it. If anyone's thinking about giving it a go I say go for it! A lot of good horizontal content and plenty of good Elder Scrolls lore.
